It’s a once in a lifetime destination, where the depth of history and culture take your breath away. An ancient wonder of the world. Immerse yourself in South America’s Incan past on this superb Tailor Made adventure. Explore the ancient capital of Cusco, the lost city of Machu Picchu, and Ollantaytambo Fortress found in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is a unique city of culture and history. Almost 3400 metres above sea level, its altitude plays a large role in the lifestyle and traditions here. On your first day in town, an afternoon tour gives you history and insight into some of the city’s most notable stops, including the Plaza de Armas, Cusco Cathedral, Santo Domingo Church and the incan ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Puca Pucara, Kenko and Tambomachay.
Stretching roughly 60 kilometres, this spectacular valley is covered in fertile farmland and Spanish colonial villages. Explore the bustling Indian market at Pisac, an excellent stop for souvenirs, before a traditional lunch at a restaurant in Urumbamba. The cobblestone streets and magnificent historic fortress of Ollantaytambo are a real highlight though, with intriguing stepped terraces and massive stones.
The journey from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu, passing through the picturesque Urubamba valley, is one where you can’t take your eyes off the passing mountain scenery. Machu Micchu is much like this too, awe-inspiring ruins of ancient architecture built on impossibly steep mountain terrain. The legendary Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu dates all the way back to 1450, only to be abandoned some 100 years later.
It’s best to avoid excessive alcohol and intense physical exertion, and drink as much water and tea as you can, while you’re acclimatising to the high altitude in Cusco.
