Escape Travel consultant Mark Fitzgerald recently returned from an unforgettable holiday through Iceland with Trafalgar. Here, he shares his amazing journey through the breathtaking and awe-inspiring landscapes this unique destination is known for.
Tell us about your recent holiday
I recently had the opportunity to join one of Trafalgar’s winter departures, Northern Lights of Iceland, on a recent holiday to Europe. This new trip is a five-day itinerary that showcases the highlights of Reykjavik and ventures to the surrounding countryside to see the Northern Lights. This trip gets you outside of the city with a professional tour guide for the best possible chance to see this elusive natural phenomenon.
What were the highlights or standout moments of your trip?
Seeing the Northern Lights was at the top of my bucket list, and this trip did not disappoint. We saw them on two nights – the lights are something I will never forget. My other two highlights were riding Icelandic horses through the volcanic countryside and taking a dip in the Blue Lagoon under the stars. Trafalgar ensured the experience was extra special with a cocktail waiting for us as we entered the milky blue water and by offering a soothing mud mask using the geothermal mud surrounding the lagoon.
Any packing tips?
Make sure you pack layer upon layer of clothes, including thermals and a good scarf and beanie as it gets terribly cold. I picked up some thermals on sale before leaving Melbourne, and then once I arrived in London, I headed straight for Camden Markets to buy the rest.
Is there anything you would do differently next time?
It was so amazing to travel through Europe in winter, from Christmas markets to shorter lines at tourist attractions and delicious mulled wine and hot chocolate. Next time I go to Iceland it will be in summer; the landscapes change dramatically and it is possible to explore far more of the island. I’ve already picked my next tour over there and will be sure to travel with Trafalgar again.
