Your Story: Ocean Cruising for a First Timer

19th September 2016

Escape Travel consultant Skye Sadauskas recently returned from an ocean cruise with Carnival, taking in all the sights of the beautiful South Pacific Islands. As her first ever cruising experience, she was thrilled to discover the variety of facilities available on board as well as the wonderful discoveries on offer at each stop along the way. Here, she tells her story.

Tell us about your recent holiday

My friend and I decided we wanted to give ocean cruising a whirl and settled on an 11-night South Pacific itinerary with Carnival. When we arrived at the port in Sydney, we were both completely blown away by the sheer size of our ship, Carnival Legend. We breezed through check in and went straight to our balcony cabin – our home for the next 10 nights. After a mandatory Facebook update, it was time for our sail away party.

The next 11 nights were packed with an array of free activities, from The Game Show, where I somehow ended up on stage, to hilarious comedy shows, themed parties and copious amounts of cocktails.

Even though our original itinerary had to be slightly re-routed due to the recent cyclone in Vanuatu, we were well taken care of, with days filled with fun both on the ship and at all the ports.

By the end of the cruise, we pretty much had to be rolled off the ship because of all the delicious food we ate, including 24-hour soft serve and made-to-order pizzas – perfect for a 2am snack after one of the themed parties. Overall, it was one of the best holiday experiences I have ever had and I wouldn’t hesitate to book another cruise in the future.

What were the highlights or stand out moments of your trip?

The staff on board the cruise ship were amazing – they knew us by name by the second day of our trip. They were fun, friendly and constantly encouraging everyone to have a good time. Swimming in the Blue Hole in Espiritu Santo and snorkelling in the clear waters surrounding the Isle of Pines were also highlights.

Any packing tips?

Leave room in your suitcase for the novelty cocktail jugs and remember to take a few pairs of bathers so they have time to dry between swims.

Any advice for first-time visitors?

Make sure you explore every area of the ship. There are so many free activities on board, so you really are spoilt for choice. If you’re on Carnival Legend, be sure to brave the adrenaline-pumping Green Thunder waterslide.

Is there anything you would do differently next time?

Next time I would try and get more friends to come with me. My friend and I had a great time, but a small group of mates would make it even better!
