It’s almost 50 years since “Gilligan’s Island” ended, yet the classic TV comedy remains just as popular as ever. Decades on from its 1964 premiere and the show is now officially the longest continually running sitcom in the world.
Synonymous with the character of sweet, country girl Mary Ann, actress Dawn Wells remains a household name thanks to the role and now the 77-year-old is gearing up for several appearances Down Under as part of the upcoming Supanova Pop Culture Expo.
During a trip to Africa. I was in Rwanda and I was celebrating my birthday. There were perhaps 20 people with me and the natives brought out a wonderful cake with frosting on it and a candle.
I blew out the candle and then tried to cut it, but couldn’t.
Everyone burst out laughing and then explained that birthday cakes there were made out of dried elephant dung, which was then covered with lots of frosting. You weren’t supposed to eat it! That’s one of my fondest travel memories.
People inspire me. I think we’re more alike than we are different.
A book and a pillow.
Somewhere quiet, where there’s nothing electronic and I’m surrounded by nature and the water. I grew up in the mountains in Nevada, here in the US, and I love that area, particularly in the summer.
That’s pretty hard - the more you know, the more you like. I’ve always liked Chicago and LA a lot. I loved New York until I actually worked there. Walking to and from work every night for six weeks - and seeing the drunks and smelling the garbage - made the city lose its appeal!

It was July, so even at 4am it was light. We were staying at the Langara Fishing Lodge and part of the service meant that every few hours they’d send a boat to us with snacks and hot chocolate.
Anyway, during the trip we suddenly found ourselves surrounded by a school of humpback whales!
They were so close, we could see hundreds of herring go straight into their gigantic mouths. If that wasn’t enough, dolphins appeared, jumping on either side of us. I couldn’t believe it was real!
Make a firm, solid list of what you want to get out of a trip and then stick to it! Likewise with packing, make sure you keep your list and go over it before you leave.
Australia! I have a few spare days and I’m determined to explore. I remember loving Hobart when I was there - all the Aboriginal villages and culture really hit me.
I liked Canberra too and Melbourne feels a bit like home to me, so I can’t wait to go back.
