Are you ready for a big family holiday? Every year, millions of families across the globe flock to the theme park capital of the world to have the time of their lives. Orlando is brimming with family friendly entertainment, with countless amusement parks, water parks and roaring roller coasters at your fingertips. If your clan is gearing up for a family holiday to Orlando, check out our top five things to do – and they aren’t all theme parks!
Explore the wonderful world of Disney
We hate to be predictable but how can we not include the Disney empire on this list? Contrary to popular belief, this is not just one big theme park, but rather many theme parks in one. The Walt Disney World Resort is made up of four theme parks, two water parks, multiple golf courses and an array of themed resort hotels. In fact, the whole resort is over 27,000 acres, so you really will need time here to explore. Start with a day at Magic Kingdom, where fairytale dreams come true or splash out at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.
Have a day of retail therapy
What’s a holiday without a little retail therapy? Orlando has its fair share of glamorous shopping malls. For starters, the Mall at Millenia is an award winning shopping destination hosting big name brands and three department stores. Then there’s the Florida Mall, holding the title for the largest shopping mall in Central Florida with over 270 specialty stores and restaurants. Bargain hunters can try the Orlando Vineyard Premium Outlets or Lake Buena Vista Factory Stores for incredibly discounted merchandise.
Enjoy the great outdoors
Orlando has an assortment of open spaces that provide respite from the rapid pace of the theme parks. Take a day to explore the magnificent Harry P. Leu Gardens, a 50 acre botanical oasis, showcasing a wide variety of flora. There’s also the beautiful Lake Eola Park situated in Downtown Orlando. Hire a swan shaped paddle boat and go for a row or sample a few refreshments at the lakeside cafe. Also in the park is the Walt Disney Amphitheatre which hosts many theatrical performances throughout the year.
Experience a little movie magic
If you love the cinema and get a little star struck when the Academy Awards are on television, than you will love Universal Studios Florida. Movie buffs can go behind-the-scenes and see how this real working film and television production facility brings blockbuster movies to life. Plus there are amazing thrill rides and entertaining live shows to enjoy. Also part of the Universal Orlando Resort, the Islands of Adventure Park is a world where cartoons and comic book heroes rule. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is particularly popular.
Go sports mad
Basketball fan? Treat the family to a live game at Amway Center and watch Orlando Magic battle it out. This modern stadium is an iconic destination and has a capacity of over 20,000. Highly touted for its state-of-the-art facilities, Amway boasts the largest scoreboard of its kind in the NBA, at 42 feet high and weighing in at more than 40 tons. Grab your foam finger and a hot dog and get passionate with the locals.
