We’re excited to announce that this week we opened a brand new store, Escape Travel Bulimba, in sunny Brisbane! An impressive new-look store located in the leafy and picturesque heart of Oxford Street, it’s nestled amongst all the action of Bulimba’s buzzing main strip. A cosmopolitan hub lined with vibrant cafes, restaurants and boutiques, it’s the perfect spot to dreamily ponder your next getaway and browse brochures over coffee before ducking into the store to lock in your travel plans – whether you’re off on a cruise, to the USA or some other corner of the world.
Launching a new store means we also have a new team on the ground full of experience, travel advice and inspiration to help you kick off your next holiday. What better way to celebrate than by chatting to them about their own travel tips and tales? Read on to reminisce with Rachel, Meghan, Maja and Nikki – they’ll take you everywhere from New York City to the Arctic Circle in a matter of minutes. If you'd prefer to chat to them in person, don't hesitate to drop by Escape Travel Bulimba to say hi or ring ahead to make an appointment!
Where was your last holiday? Europe on a river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam, then to Finland into the Arctic Circle! Lots of husky and snowmobile rides and I even got to meet the real Santa!
What do you think is the next hot spot for travellers? Burma. It's untouched!! Burma has only been open to the public for three years.
If you could go anywhere in the world right this moment, where would it be? Antarctica because this is the best time of the year to see this spectacular continent! This place will always be on my to-do list.
What do you love about being a consultant? I have been on some incredible trips and seen some truly amazing places. Travelling is my true passion and cannot think of a better career than being able to help others travel and experience this wonderful world of ours.
What’s your favourite natural sight in the world? The first time I went to Canada, I arrived into Banff at night. I will never forget waking up the next morning and seeing the Rockie Mountains for the first time...they are truly spectacular. It’s all dazzling peaks, emerald green lakes and abundant wildlife! Photos do not do it justice; you really have to see it for yourself.
Have you ever travelled somewhere and loved it so much you went back? I love Fiji and have been several times! On my last trip I got off the beaten track and went to the Northern Islands of Taveuni and Qamea. It was a truly unique and authentic Fijian experience. I spent my days lazing on white sandy beaches, snorkelling the most spectacular coral reefs I have ever seen and eating freshly caught seafood, all washed down with a coconut plucked straight from the tree! What really makes Fiji special for me though is the people. They are the friendliest people you will ever meet, and always welcome you with open arms and a big smile.
Where are you off to next? My next trip is a ski holiday to New Zealand. It will be the first time my five-year-old has been to the snow, and we can’t wait to have snowball fights, go tobogganing and of course build a snowman!
Why do you love being a consultant? Travel is my passion. I love learning about new cultures and am always looking for new places to visit and experience. Every day I get to talk about what I love and share my knowledge and experiences with my clients, and be part of their travel story.
What’s the most adventurous thing you've done overseas? It would have to be the overnight adventure in Ko Pha Ngan. We got a ferry over from Koh Samui and rented a jeep to explore the island and then camped on the beach after a full moon party!
What’s your favourite stopover city? It would have to be Dubai! It has everything you need from a stopover destination - beach, shopping, tours and plenty of accommodation options.
What’s your favourite holiday spot in Australia? I love Hamilton Island. It has to be one of the most amazing places I have ever seen. I was lucky enough to live there for four years and experience all the beautiful islands surrounding it.
What do you love about being a consultant? I get the chance to speak to customers every day about the exciting places they are going to explore and it allows me to provide them with insider tips from places I have been lucky enough to visit myself.
What’s your best travel memory? I have honestly had so many I couldn't possibly narrow it down to just one, so to name a few: horse riding in the Appalachian Mountains, ice skating in Central Park in New York City, a high tea in London for my Birthday, and celebrating Flight Centre's Global Awards in Cancun, Mexico!
Where have you been that totally exceeded your expectations? Samoa! It was supposed to be a beach getaway to relax and spend quality time with my closest girlfriends, but it turned out to be the trip of a lifetime. The beach, the water, the food, the country, its culture and its people made it such an amazing experience we'll all remember forever.
What destinations are at the top of your bucket list? India, Tahiti & Alaska!!
What do you love about being a consultant? I love booking and planning my clients’ trips but I think I love hearing about their travel stories when they return the most. It makes me feel like I was there with them and it sparks my own travel ambitions.
What's the most unique or out-of-the-way destination you've been to?One of the most remote places I have been lucky enough to visit was Tromso in the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway. Dog sledding and snowmobiling was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience and so much fun!
Where in the world is your ultimate beach getaway?
That would have to be the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. It is so picture-perfect and the people make you feel so welcome – after a couple of days you are one of the locals. They have beach parties every night and the food is amazing.
What do you think is the best part about going on holidays?
Every holiday can be different and I've never been to the same place twice. My last holiday was a 'flop and drop' but for my next holiday I'm planning on doing an adventure tour. It’s all about immersing yourself in something new – the food, the different smells, the people, other cultures and ways of life. I love getting out of my comfort zone and experiencing new things. Travel is the only thing money can buy that makes you richer!
Why do you love being a consultant?
I love being a consultant because I get to talk about travel all day! We get to create memories and experiences for people which can be really rewarding – sending couples on their honeymoons, planning weddings and once-in-a-lifetime family holidays. It's not often you get to work for a company that encourages you to go and explore the world.
