Top Tips for Brazil
Coffee... Coffee is a way of life in Brazil. It doesn’t matter what time of day or night it is, a warm brew is always welcome. Coffee shops are easy to find, but don’t be surprised if your coffee comes in a paper cup that's smaller than your usual. Called a ‘cafezhino’, this little Brazilian coffee sure packs a punch in flavour and intensity.
Soccer... Brazil is crazy about soccer, so be sure to grab some tickets to a match while you’re here. Though don’t make the mistake of actually calling it ‘soccer’... here, it’s ‘football’. Soccer fan or not, you’ll be totally blown away by the ecstatic and passionate atmosphere that comes to life in the stadium.
Samba... Head to a samba club to soak up the sultry beats and get those hips grooving just like the locals. A lively, rhythmical style of dance, beginners can easily find samba lessons to bring their skills up to scratch, or simply give it a go on the dance floors across the cities. At the very least you’ll enjoy the music.
Food... When it comes time to eat, beware that the meat comes in massive portion sizes here and the favourite cooking style is barbeque. But also don’t leave without trying some pao de queijo, bite-size morsels made from cheese and bread, feijoada, a stew made from pork and black beans, and acai, a superfood fruit from the Amazon.
Language... While some locals do speak English, the majority of Brazilians don’t, so pack a phrasebook and get to know a few handy phrases and words before you go. Remember though that the local language is Portuguese and not Spanish like the rest of South America. Don’t be scared to attempt to speak to locals either – they’re incredibly friendly and lively people!
