Five Fab Day Trips from San Francisco

11th July 2014

San Francisco is a vibrant city with a lot to see and do. It’s also a fabulous base to take a whole range of awesome day trips the whole family will enjoy. We saw some of the most stunning scenery traveling to these tourist hot spots.  California has so much to offer, here are just five fab day trips:

1) Sausalito

This seaside town is a quick ferry ride from the San Francisco Wharf. With gorgeous weatherboard houses perched on the hillside, a buzzing restaurant and shopping strip and boats lining the harbor, there’s so much to see there. And the ferry ride at night, with views of San Francisco harbor and the Golden Gate Bridge, is stunning.

2) Napa Valley.

This iconic wine region has some of the most beautiful wineries, restaurants and views you’d expect. We took a trip to Francis Ford Coppola’s winery Inglenook. Not only is the winery itself absolutely stunning and the premium wines delicious, if you walk up the grand stairway there’s his Oscars and other film memorabilia.

3) Lake Tahoe

This place is simply divine. It’s the perfect place to spend the day relaxing by the lake. If you’re into skiing then snow season would be jam-packed full of fun. If not, you could pick the warmer months for boating.  Or just sit in a lakeside restaurant and watch the world go by.

4) Yosemite.

It would have to be one of the most visually stunning landscapes in the whole of California, let alone the world. From snow-capped mountains to sheer rock faces and waterfalls. This place is a rock climber’s and bush walker’s dream.

5) Monterey and Carmel.

It is well worth a visit. The Monterey Aquarium is fantastic and the Dennis the Menace Park playground is loads of fun. The nearby, Carmel-by-the-Sea is an upmarket, quaint town which is a gorgeous spot to shop and eat fine food. It’s been rated a Top 10 destination in the US.

If you had limited time you could do organized day trips to one, or all, of these wonderful places or do as we did and spend a bit of time in each. Accommodation options suit all families and there’s definitely enough to keep you occupied in each place.
