Escape Travel Family Reviewer Bianca Wordley, her husband and their three girls, recently traveled to Palm Cove and they discovered it was the perfect base to explore the local tourist hot spots.
The tropical beachside town, in Queensland’s Far North, is central to Port Douglas, Kuranda, the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and Tablelands. It is a truly magical hideaway and the gateway to so many stunning places.
If you’re looking for an easy day trip, then Cairns is the best option with kids. It is a simple 20 minute drive from Palm Cove and once you get there, there’s plenty to do.
We jumped in our hire car and went straight to Muddy’s on the Cairns Esplanade. This free playground, which stretches along the foreshore, is a child’s dream. There’s water play, a flying fox, rope swings and loads of equipment, which suits all ages from babies to primary school aged kids.
Next off, we headed down the road to the lagoon. This place is sensational. It’s like the biggest infinity style pool you’ve ever seen. Kids paddle on the sandy edges while others swim out to the deeper water. There’s plenty of shade to set-up for the afternoon and it makes for a relaxing day.
After bribing the kids with the promise of ice cream, to get them out of the water, we then made our way to Devine Gelato. You’ve just got to try the mango sorbet and the rich dark chocolate.
As we drove out of the city center, we made a quick detour to the Botanic Gardens to check out the Bamboo Collection and for some butterfly and bush turkey spotting. It was so beautiful.
And then when the humidity sent the sweat dripping down the backs of our legs we returned to Palm Cove for yet another swim in the Grand Mercure Rockford Esplanade Apartments’ awesome pool.
Life in the tropics is holidaying at its best.
