From the moment you arrive in Palm Cove you feel instantly relaxed, discovered Escape Travel Family Reviewer Bianca Wordley when she traveled there with her family for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve.
The tropical beachside town, in Queensland’s Far North, is lined with majestic gums and lush palm trees. Restaurants, cafes and hotels sit side-by-side along the foreshore, all with magnificent views of the ocean.
It’s the perfect spot for traveling with children if you’re looking for a five star tropical experience – and it can be done on a budget. One of its major draw cards is there are many families all seeking out the same thing – a quiet, chilled out, luxurious holiday. So, unlike other similar places, you don’t feel uncomfortable when you walk into a restaurant with your children in tow.
The town is an easy 20 minute drive from Cairns and there are a number of family-friendly airport transfer options. You can also hire a car from Palm Cove if you want to take advantage of its central proximity to a heap of great day trips. But if all you want to do is swim, eat and relax then everything you’ll need is within walking distance.
Every morning we ate breakfast at the beautiful Vivo Bar and Grill, followed by a stroll to the beachside playground so the kids could play and we could watch the boats on the water. Every afternoon was spent swimming in our hotel’s amazing pool, under the canopy of palms.
We had a self-contained apartment, at the Grand Mercure Rockford Esplanade, so ate in most nights, but can recommend Pete’s Place for great fish and chips and the Choc Dee Thai Restaurant for some awesome Thai food.
And if you ever have the chance, then plan a special trip to Palm Cove for New Year’s Eve. Fireworks on the jetty, families gathered on picnic rugs, champagne, kids playing in the sand and lots of laughter. It’s the most amazing gift to spend time together in an unforgettable part of the world.
We are already planning our next trip there.
