Visa & Entry Requirements
Visitors from most countries will require an entry visa when traveling to Vietnam, with only some Nordic and ASEAN countries exempt from this requirement. All visitors must have a passport that is valid for at least one month after the expiration of the visa. A 30-day, single entry tourist visa costs approx. $65US from Vietnamese embassies and takes around one week to process, though express options are available at an increased cost.
A visa-on-arrival service is available for travelers arriving by air, but requires a pre-arranged application to the immigration department and is usually only employed by visitors from countries that do not have Vietnamese embassies. Those intending to use this service should ensure they have the correct documents and money available in advance.
An arrival / departure card is issued to all visitors upon entry. Visitors must retain the departure portion and present it to immigration when leaving the country.
If you lose your passport containing your visa whilst in Vietnam you will need to obtain an exit visa from a Vietnamese immigration office prior to leaving the country. You will not be permitted to leave the country without one. The process to get an exit visa takes up to 4 business days.
All foreigners are required to register their place of residence with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. Failure to do so could result in fines. If you are staying at a hotel, this is done as part of the normal check-in process and you will be required to provide your passport to the hotel for this purpose.
As entry requirements may change from time to time it is strongly advised that you check with the department of foreign affairs or your local consulate or embassy for the current requirements.
