My Son Information

My Son is the site of the ruins of a centre for the Champa Kingdom which thrived here from for over a thousand years from around the 4th century. It is located not far from Hoi An and Danang in a relatively undeveloped province in central Vietnam. The trip can be made in about an hour, and there are quite a number of tour buses that take visitors.

The architecture of the remaining buildings is reminiscent of other Indian influenced sites in South East Asia such as Angkor Wat, although the site at My Son is not nearly as grand. The cluster of building is thought to have been a major centre for the Champa for religion and learning and was the site where the Kings were crowned and also buried. Curiosity remains as to the method of building used here as the bricks appear to have no mortar holding them in place.

My Son became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. Many of the buildings were damaged by American bombing during the Vietnam war as it was thought to be a base used by the Viet Cong.

It is a very popular tourist site and it may be worth hiring a driver and car from Hoi An and getting there before the tour buses to enjoy a little more ambience when visiting.
