Halong Bay Information

This has to be one of the most visually stunning places on earth. Well over 1,000 vegetation shrouded limestone islands of all shapes and sizes rise from the sea, many almost vertically, making the experience of just being on the bay something quite extraordinary.

The waters of Halong Bay have a variety of different ecosystems. There are mangrove forests, coral reefs, small fresh water lakes, sandy beaches and freshwater swamp forests. Sea kayak is probably the best way to experience the bay and find secluded parts for yourself, but that's not for everybody.

For most, Halong (or Hai Long) is visited on a cruise boat. You can do it cheaply on a cut price 'junk' that will deposit you on a tourist island or floating shop and then back in what feels like a rush, or on various standards of cruise ship, including some quite luxurious but usually no more authentic 'junks' of varying sizes. Most cruises are overnight affairs, but some last longer running from Hanoi. Prices vary as dramatically as the standard of the boats and service offered.

The main base for visiting the bay is the town of Cat Ba City on Cat Ba island. Most Hanoi hotels offer tours to Halong Bay which is about 165 kilometres away. It is best accessed by renting a car for the 3 and a half hour drive from Hanoi although you can also take a bus or even check it out from a helicopter.
