Language & Communications

Vanuatu is regarded as the most linguistically diverse nation on earth, with over 100 distinct languages in everyday use. Sadly, some of these indigenous languages have become extinct, with many now spoken by as few as a handful of people. There are actually three official languages in Vanuatu: English, French and the most widely understood language, Bislama - a pidgin language based on an English vocabulary with Melanesian grammar. English is widely spoken and understood, as is French, but to a lesser degree.

The international country dialling code to access Vanuatu is +678. There are no area codes within the country. Public telephones can be found at post offices and airports, with phone cards available from post offices. All international calls from Vanuatu made through land lines, are placed through an operator.

Vanuatu has a mobile network with good coverage and works on the GSM system. Although roaming agreements are in place with several international carriers, special ‘visitor SIM’ cards can offer more attractive call costs and are available from post offices.

There are a few internet cafes in Port Vila and Luganville and access is also offered at some post offices. Many hotels and resorts also offer internet access, with an increasing number able to offer high speed DSL or WiFi in guest rooms.
