Weather & Climate

Vanuatu’s climate ranges from tropical to subtropical with a wet season lasting from November to April. The dry season from May to October is the most popular time to visit the islands and most festivals and ceremonies are held during this dry, cooler time of the year when the days are a glorious 23°C on average and the water temperature rarely drops below 22°C. Nights can drop to a chilly 12°C during winter (June through August), so be prepared if visiting Vanuatu at this time. In summer (December to February), temperatures range from 18°C to 32°C in Port Vila. The southern islands such as Tanna are a degree or two cooler throughout the year.

The weather is generally humid and rainy from November to April. Vanuatu’s average rainfall is around 2400mm annually, but can be as high as 4000mm in the north. Between December and April, cyclones are probable, with an average of 2.5 cyclones per year.
