Vermont Information

Located in the northeast of the US and bordered by New York to the West, New Hampshire to the East, Massachusetts to the South and the Canadian border to the North, Vermont is famous for maple syrup, creamy cheddar cheese and the beautiful New England countryside. Known as ‘the Green Mountain State’ Vermont is the second least populous state in the US and is 80% covered by forest with the remainder made up of meadows, lakes and wetlands making it an attractive holiday destination for east-coasters looking for a nature getaway.

Traditional home of the Abenaki people Vermont was first discovered by Europeans when the French explored the area in the late 1500s. Colonized by both French and English settlers the region was eventually ceded to England in 1763. The area was claimed by several of the surrounding provinces but eventually gained it’s own statehood when it was accepted into the Union as the fourteenth state in 1791 with the capital city being Montpelier in the centre of the state. The economy during the nineteenth century consisted mainly of sheep farming but this slowly gave way to dairy farming which remains the principle source of agricultural revenue in the state today. Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the US and manufacturing and tourism are the other main industries.

The climate of Vermont is quite variable and is dependent upon the elevation of the landscape. Generally the higher the elevation the colder and wetter the weather. The summers are mild with a daytime average temperature of 26°C (78°F) while the winters can be bitterly cold averaging minus 2°C (28°F) during the day and often accompanied by freezing rain or snowstorms, and therefore skiing in the mountains is usually very good. Spring brings with it ‘mud season’ as the ground thaws out and any unsealed ground turns to mush. Autumn (or fall) is arguably the best season to visit Vermont as the trees turn every shade of red, gold and russet during September and October. Lake Champlain - the sixth largest fresh water lake in the US is on the western border and separates northern Vermont from New York. It is a beautiful area for swimming and boating and is a well known fishing spot for salmon, bass and trout. The Green Mountains that bisect the state run north / south and provide some of the best skiing and hiking on the East Coast. In summer the clear pristine mountain streams and lakes are perfect for swimming and kayaking. The rolling hills make for an unforgettable hiking holiday or challenge the Long Trail - at 438 km (272 miles) it is the oldest long distance trail in the US. In winter the ski resort towns like Stowe, and Killington on the slopes of the Green Mountains are a popular holiday destination as Vermont has some of the best skiing in the eastern US. Take a cycle or bus tour through the New England countryside to view the autumn foliage during September and October, or see it all from above on a ski resort chairlift in the ‘off’ season.

The charming rustic farmland combined with picturesque natural beauty make Vermont one of the hidden secrets of the eastern US that should not be missed.
