San Diego Information

Kick back, sip on a margarita and feel the sand between your toes. Nearer to Mexico the pace relaxes, and in San Diego County you find Californian coastal towns straight out of a Beach Boys album. This area boasts beautiful beaches that are home to some of the world's most famous surf breaks, and a relaxed history that is both fun and easyto explore.

Top of this area's to-do list has to be enjoying the beaches. Take the coastal highway and tour the communities of La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach and Oceanside. Even if you don't surf, you can learn about it at the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, the same city where you can find regional information at the California Welcome CenterSM or just watch the sun set on the Pacific waves while sipping a cocktail on La Jolla's ultra-cool Prospect Street.

In the city of San Diego, many attractions are near the picturesque bayfront area. California's oldest city has a large naval connection and visitors can explore it at the USS Midway Museum and the Maritime Museum.

Legendary gunfighter Wyatt Earp once ran saloons in the National Historic District, which has been preserved with brick sidewalks and Victorian buildings. The city is very safe and the Gaslamp Quarter - so named because of the old gas street lights - is a wonderful place to explore for dinner, drinks and dancing.

Another great neighbourhood for dining, shopping or simply people-watching is the trendy, upcoming adult playground of Hillcrest. Over the 3.5-kilometre long San Diego-Coronado Bridge lies the quaint village of Coronado, with golden beaches and hotels. Most famous of these is the Hotel del Coronado, much of the setting for the Billy Wilder comedy Some Like It Hot starring Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis.

One of San Diego's most famous tourist attractions is the zoo. Located at Balboa Park, you can easily lose days exploring the nation's largest cultural park with its 15 museums, lush gardens, performing arts venues and, of course, the animals. The zoo is a world-renowned authority on conservation and has 10 faithfully recreated habitats containing some of the world's most endangered species.

Other wonderful San Diego attractions include SeaWorld (where among the sharks and killer whales you can see the extremely rare Florida manatees), the San Diego Wild Animal Park and family- favourite Legoland.

Top five things to do in San Diego

- Enjoy happy hour in the historic Gaslamp Quarter and then enjoy some late-night music at venues like the ever-popular Cafe Sevilla.

- Take the San Diego Trolley down to the Mexican border. If that's too hard, visit the Mexican quarter in the Old Town and have a margarita.

- Soak up San Diego's perfect climate with the outdoor activities in the area - cycling, mountain biking, surfing and golf. Or get out of the city and hike in the Anza Borrego Desert.

- Join the locals and watch some sports - baseball, basketball and football are keenly followed and it's worth taking in a game for the atmosphere alone. Qualcomm Stadium and PETCO Park are great venues for this.

- Give the credit card a workout in San Diego County's outlet centres, open-air malls or the upscale boutiques in downtown La Jolla.
