Rhode Island Information

Rhode Island is the smallest state in United States by area. It is located in north east United States and borders Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York state in the south. Despite its name, most of Rhode Island is actually connected to mainland United States.

The geography of mainland Rhode Island is flat with many beaches and bays. The state also has over 30 islands of which Aquidneck is the largest. The climate of Rhode Island is typical of the area with hot, humid and wet summers and cold winters.

The population of Rhode Island is only a little over a million people with the state capital, Providence having a population of 175,000. Other major towns include Warwick, Cranston and Pawtucket. Rhode Island's industry was originally based around farming and fishing but these days has evolved to concentrate on tourism, manufacturing and health services. Tourism is supported by the rural, seaside atmosphere with plenty of small towns for travelers to base themselves in explore the state. There are many examples of colonial architecture still in existence in Rhode Island that does much to give the state its feeling of stepping back into the America of old.

The most celebrated destination on Rhode Island is Newport, on the island of Aquidneck. Newport is famous for attracting the rich and famous and their extravagant summer houses and parties have made the island a household name around the world. Families such as the Vanderbilts and Perry's are intertwined with Newports history and it was there that Jacqueline Bouvier married John F Kennedy. Newport is also well known as the home of the Americas Cup yacht race.

Rhode Island is small but distinct state that offers travelers a chance to relax and drop back into time and enjoy life by the sea.
