Oregon Information

Oregon is located in north west United States on the Pacific coast and neighbors the states of Washington, California, Idaho and Nevada.

It is an amazing state geographically with many surprises and extremes. The west coast is endowed with spectacular scenery as the rocky shoreline and towering forests meet the power of the pacific while a short distance inland to the north, travelers will find the towering peaks of the Cascade mountains. These mountain ranges contain pristine rivers, thick forest and breathtaking views. At 3,400m Mount Hood is the tallest peak in Oregon and is famous for its skiing and hiking as well as providing a striking backdrop to Portland city. Inland southern Oregon is home to the Crater lake and the surrounding national park that boasts an abundance of world class fishing, hiking, old growth forests and stunning waterfalls.

The capital city Salem, Portland, Eugene and most of the other larger cities are located to the north of the state, inland from the coast where the countryside is a little flatter and easier to get around. Eastern Oregon demonstrates Oregon's amazing diversity as the very rainy highly forested mountains changes into a wide dry desert more reminiscent of Nevada and 'western movies'.

Oregon is naturally an attractive destination for those looking to get out and enjoy nature. Popular activities include rafting, bike riding, hiking, camping and skiing. There is a considerable range of wildlife to be found amongst the forests and deserts of Oregon though not all of it is friendly, hikers should be alert for bears and snakes. For those that wish to take life at more relaxed pace there are many wineries to visit, impressive drives through the unforgettable scenery and the usual attractions and comforts of the larger cities.

The climate of Oregon is quite extreme with deserts in the east hitting 48 degrees celsius in summer and -47 degrees celsius in the winter up on the mountains. Care must be taken when traveling in the wild as these temperatures are extreme.
