Nashville Information

Tennessee's capital city is Nashville, a name instantly recognised around the world as being the home of country music. It is located in Northern part of the state and is situated on the banks of the 1000 km long Cumberland river. It is quite a large city with population of around 2 million people and is home to many universities and large corporations.

Nashville was founded in 1779 and quickly reached prominence as a major transport hub due to its location on the river and a junction of railway routes. During the 1920's and 30's Nashville become a publishing centre for the United States that also encompassed the music industry ensuring its fame.

The city has undergone tremendous growth as part of an aggressive urban renewal program and today is an attractive easy to get around city for travelers. The downtown areas sports a large range of restaurants, clubs, entertainment venues as well as numerous accommodation options. As expected there are a lot of opportunities to listen to live country music.

Highlights of Nashville include the downtown area, the many parks and gardens, a full scale recreation of the Greek Parthenon in Centennial Park and the Country Music Hall of fame. For history buffs there is the Music Valley Wax Museum, the excellent Belle Meade Plantation, Fort Negley and one of the United States largest museums, the Tennessee State Museum.

The Climate of Nashville is typical of the south with long hot humid summers followed by short mild winters. Visitors should be aware of thunderstorms and the occasional tornado that are active in the spring and autumn months.
