Minnesota Information

Minnesota is the 12th largest state in the US and is located in the upper midwest on the shores of lake Superior. It is known as the "land of 10,000" lakes which is actually not an exaggeration. The state enjoys a population of 5.2 million of which around a half live in the "Twin Cities" of the state capital Saint Paul and its near neighbour Minneapolis.

Being such a remote and heavily forested state it wasn't long before the first European settlers established a large lumber industry using the transport opportunity provided by the Great Lakes. In 1880's iron ore was discovered in quantities sufficient for mining and this created a second large industry for the state. The great depression hit the Minnesotan economy particularly hard and it wasn't until after the second world war that Minnesota bounced back developing a new industry, technology, that spun off many famous companies including Sperry, 3M and Cray.

The Geography of Minnesota is ancient containing the oldest known rocks that have been discovered, some of these date back 2.7 billion years. This wild and sparsely populated state is covered in lakes, rivers, forests and mountains and with a healthy wildlife population including the bald eagle and many migratory species of birds. As would be expected the lakes, rivers and streams are teaming with fish including trout, bass and pike.

The weather in Minnesota can be extreme with some very hots days being recorded in summer of up to 45 degrees and down to -51 degrees in winter, an astonishing temperature range of 96 degrees!

The "Twin Cities" provide travelers with a great place to jump off and start exploring the states natural beauty as well as finding plenty of activities in the cities themselves. There is a good mix of accommodation in the more far flung areas though visitors are advised to plan carefully due to seasonal variations.
