Michigan Information

Michigan is located in northern USA in the heart of the Great Lakes Region. Michigan enjoys a reputation of being one of the United States more scenic and natural states boasting 12,000 lakes, almost 40 deep water ports and the most amount of kilometres of shoreline of any state except Alaska. Michigan borders 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie which naturally makes fishing, boating, diving and swimming very popular with the locals and tourists. Michigan is broken up into two major peninsulas which are dotted with countless small historic towns, national parks, farms and a few large cities of which Detroit is the best known.

In the 17th century French explorers settled on shores of Lake Michigan and started trading with the local Indians. The next three centuries witnessed a typically turbulent period of time where at stages the British and French fought for control of the area. The industry of fur trading exploded as did the mining of copper and iron and the harvesting of timber helping spur along the early development of the state.

However the most significant change in the recent history of Michigan was the birth of the automotive industry. Henry Fords car manufacturing plant in Highland Park forever changed the way cars were constructed which has had wide spread ramifications for the US and the rest of the world.
