Anchorage Information

Anchorage is a unique urban environment set in the heart of great the Alaskan wilderness and sits snugly between the shores of Cook Inlet and the Chugach National Park.

This is a modern city brimming with arts and culture and is a venue for world class sporting, music and entertainment events year round. Warm and friendly shops line the downtown avenues and provide the visitor with countless ways to spend the day browsing or exploring the many galleries and specialty shops beneath the city's modern skyline.

The subarctic climate of Anchorage is tempered by the city's location near the coast with mild summers and cold winters. The period of May to September is thought by many to be the best time to visit Anchorage with average daytime temperatures in the summer months being 17.5 degrees C (63deg F) while in winter it is minus 4 degrees C (25deg F). Days are very long in summer with up to 19 hours of daylight per day, whilst in winter there can be as little as 3.5 hours of daylight.

Anchorage is home to an amazing variety of things to see and experience regardless of which direction you head out from the city. There are glorious mountains and stark glaciers, abundant wildlife that is easily watchable, adventure sports as well as the beautiful and awe-inspiring northern lights.

In winter the kilometres of virgin snow provide a frozen paradise for ski-boarders and alpine and Nordic skiers to explore and conquer. Or for the more adventurous why not try ice shoeing or dog sledding through the miles of untracked trails.

No matter what time of year you visit, Anchorage will surprise you with its abundant wildlife, scenery and friendly inhabitants while providing a convenient launching point for further Alaskan vacation exploration.
