Amsterdam Information

Amsterdam is a beautiful, traditional city first settled in the fourteenth century. Today it is the business and financial centre of the Netherlands and is an extremely popular tourist destination. Unlike many European cities during the second World War, Amsterdam was never extensively bombed, nor have the city planners ever demolished large sections of the city in an effort to modernise it. The result is a very large and authentic historic city where little has changed in several hundred years making it an excellent example of traditional Dutch architecture.

In the early seventeenth century an ambitious plan was drawn up that would involve building four concentric canals that linked the city areas together and open up into a bay on one side. Three of these canals were used for residential development which quickly became the focus and centre of the city. These distinctive canals and their historic bridges are still very much intact today, framing many delightful scenes and providing a multitude of areas for exploration.

The centre of Amsterdam is reasonably small and flat making it an easy effort to walk or ride to any attractions you wish to see. There are many outlets where visitors can hire a bike and go exploring with the city offering many dedicated bike lanes. Commuters and car drivers are used to the hoards of bike riders which makes it safe and easy to get around.

Amsterdam is also famous for its permissive sex and drug laws which attracts many tourists that would like to experience life on the other side in a safe environment. Amsterdam is tolerant to a point, with the sex and drug precinct limited to just one small area. This means that everyday tourists and families can enjoy the attractions of this beautiful city without being exposed the red light district.

Art fans can view many Dutch art masterpieces including works by Rembrandt in several art galleries in the centre of town including the Riijksmuseum which features over one million pieces by a multitude of artists. A museum is also devoted to Van Gogh's early work including some of his most famous paintings created when he lived in the city.

As well as Amsterdam's large collection of world class museums the city offers some fantastic music and theatre venues that cater to all types of musical tastes. The spectacular Concertgebouw is one of the worlds most famous classical concert halls and is considered to have some of the best acoustics available and at the other end of the scale sits The Heineken Music Hall which is a very large and popular venue for pop and rock concerts.

Amsterdam has much to offer visitors from historic architecture, charming canals, its many museums, shops and restaurants to the vibrant nightlife. Amsterdam has become one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations and with the breadth of activities to enjoy its not hard to see why.
