Chiang Mai Information

Rich in history and tradition, this 700-year-old city is Northern Thailand's most culturally significant city and arguably the nation's best vehicle for educating, enlightening and entertaining international visitors. Explore centuries-old temples, trek through the jungle, attend an elephant training camp, enrol in a Thai cooking class, experience a Thai massage (or learn how to do one yourself), enter a 14th-century temple, or kick up your heels at one of the city's many annual festivals.

Named the 'Rose of the north' for the abundance of flowers that thrive in the cooler mountain climate, Chiang Mai has a remarkable mountain backdrop, more than 300 temples and a historical aura. Despite the abundance of heritage and tradition it is also modern and cosmopolitan. It has fantastic food, plenty of accommodation options and entertainment. Shopping is also plentiful and Chang Mai has some of Thailand's best markets. Compared to much of Thailand the nights are relatively cool. The local people themselves are an unforgettable part of Chiang Mai.

One of the best things about Chiang Mai for visitors is that there are some wonderful places outside of the city that really showcase what Northern Thailand is really about. Visit an elephant training course or conservation camp, spend some time with one of the local hill tribes or take a trek into the mountains.
