Culture & history
Thailand's cultural beginnings are in ancient India, the legacy of which is observed with the Buddhist traditions still alive and well in the country today. Bangkok has over 400 fascinating temples (or wats) alone which can be visited, and of course the famous 46 metre long Wat Pho Reclining Buddha. The influence of the powerful Khmer Empire that once ruled here is also much in evidence in Thailand. Khmer treasures can be found throughout the country and include the ancient temple of Phimai and the Muang Singh sanctuary.
A guided trek into the hills are a great way to witness the traditional ways that many of the Thai people still observe. Thailand's hill tribes in the northern villages number around 20 different ethnic groups and add up tp over half a million. A different aspect of the countries history can be explores with a visit to the bridge over the River Kwai, a section of the infamous Burma Railway and the subject of a famous World War II movie of the same name. In fact the province of Kanchanaburi, where the bridge is located, is home to many fascinating pieces of local history and culture and is well worth a day trip.
Natural wonders
Thailand's natural beauty needs no introduction, for it has given rise to more exotic travel destinations than any other country its size. The nation's geographical diversity are an outstanding asset and covers everything from white sandy coastlines to thick rainforests, soaring cliffs, majestic mountains and cool highlands.
Thailand's tropical resorts are the stuff of screensaver heaven, with glorious beaches of soft white sand lapped by warm, swim-safe azure waters. There is a beach holiday to suit every taste and budget in Thailand. Those looking for an activity-packed beach holiday, with never a dull moment, can head to busy Pattaya, just two hours drive from Bangkok, or to bustling Phuket or romantic Koh Samui, with their miles of palm-fringed sandy beaches backed by more attractions and activities than you can poke a snorkel at. For those wanting the true 'great escape', visitors can walk the beaches of untouched Koh Yao or head to Khao Lak, Phi Phi, Koh Pha Ngan and Hua Hin, each offering their own unique style of paradise.
Beyond the beach, take a sea canoe or go diving around breathtaking Phang Nga Bay, an eco hotspot showcasing the local mangroves, caves and intricate rock formations. Go on a safari tour or elephant trek or hike the mountainous regions of the north to visit the local hill tribes.
Shopping
It's no secret that Thailand is the preferred holiday destination of shoppers in the know. Many repeat visitors are there purely for the shopping and it's easy to see why: traditional handicrafts, gems, 'designer' and label clothing, jewellery and antiques are ripe for the picking throughout Thailand's marketplaces (and may the best barterer win!). However, if crowded markets aren't your thing, then you will also find that Thailand has many high end department stores and shopping districts. Be sure to check out the MBK Centre which has seven floors of shops selling everything from cheap clothing to pianos.
Dining
Food lovers will certainly love Thailand's distinctive cuisine, not just for the freshness and variety of available, but also for the opportunity to learn it's secrets at a Thai cooking school. Known for its liberal usage of fresh herbs and spices, as well as the delicious fish sauce, Thai food has emerged from it's regional influences over centuries especially Malaysia, India, China and Laos.
