Tuamotu-Gambier Islands Information

The Tuamotus Gambier Islands are a massive chain of coral atolls which cover an area the size of western Europe. The 76 Islands that make up this chain are all low lying coral islands formed by sand collecting on the top of reefs over time and eventually attracting vegetation and wildlife.

The islands have a total population of a little over 15,000 inhabitants of which the majority live in a 400 kilomtere radius of Mururoa and Fangataufa. Many of the locals are engaged in the cultivation of black pearls and copra preparation. Tourism is not as large scale on the Tuamotus Islands as it is on the Society Islands but there are still many fantastic diving and snorkeling destinations including Manihi and Rangiroa Islands.

Rangiroa has several guesthouses and hotels and is renowned for its diving which it boasts are some of the best in the world. The crystal clear lagoon only has two entrances and during the tidal changes an amazing array of sea life gathers at these points including sharks and dolphins which makes for some incredible diving experiences.

Mannihi is a large coral atoll in the shape of a 20 kilometer oval. It hosts a five star resort that has overwater bungalows and an airfield that is serviced by Air Tahiti. The diving and snorkeling in Manihi is stunning, as is typical for Tuamoto islands, with a huge depth of easily accessible sea life including Manta Rays easily discovered by visitors.
