Papeete Information

The capital of Tahiti, Papeete will most likely provide you with your first taste of French Polynesia. The bustling city is the travel, shipping and administrative hub of the region as well as the gateway to the other islands in French Polynesia.

The city's busy waterfront is full of action day and night. Spend the day watching the busy world sailor chug by on a variety of different watercraft of all shapes and sizes-from local fishing boats and expensive yachts to cruise boats and tankers-as they criss-cross the harbour from sunrise to sunset. At night, the hustle and bustle moves to dry land, where crowds of locals (and visitors) descend to meet, greet and eat at mobile food vans called Les Roulottes, serving up all kinds of cheap and tasty snacks from early evening until the small hours of morning.

Soak up the colourful, local atmosphere while you shop at the bustling Papeete Market where you'll find everything from art and souvenirs to handicrafts, pastries, fresh vegetables, flowers and all kinds of tropical fruit. Sunday morning is the busiest time to visit, but also the best, as you mingle with locals and tourists alike and get a taste of a true Tahitian market.

Papeete is also a great base from which to explore the sites around the island of Tahiti Nui. Plan a day trip to take in some of the inland attractions: a guided tour ensures you see all the best.
