Seville Information

Seville is the capital and largest city of Spain’s fiery Andalucía region. Divided by the Guadalquivir River in the country’s south west, the city was an important centre of trade throughout Roman, Moorish, and Spanish rule, but is nowadays known as one of Spain’s cultural hotspots.

And you certainly won’t be disappointed if culture is what you’re looking for. Seville has accumulated a spectacular array of landmarks over its two-thousand year history, and the city’s architecture gives as good an account of its past as any textbook. Roman, Mudéjar, and Baroque structures populate the skyline, and the Real Alcázar Palace and Cathedral of Seville are always favourites. Both were originally Moorish structures but were modified (or in the case of the cathedral, which was once a mosque, all but destroyed) to suit Spanish tastes after Seville was recaptured by Spanish forces in the thirteenth century. But even though the landmarks take the cake, the city as a whole, from the quaint old Jewish Quarter to the brand new Metropol Parasol is an architectural marvel.

Some excellent museums and art galleries are also scattered about the city, ranging in theme from Fine Art to Flamenco and Archaeology. After soaking up some history, make sure you check out the open air markets, a bull fight, or a live Flamenco performance. If you’re especially keen to witness Spanish and Andalucían culture at its finest, aim to visit Seville during Semanta Santa (Easter Week) and Feria de Abril (the festival immediately afterwards); expect an elaborate religious procession and then one intense party.

And while sightseeing and shopping are bound to take up plenty of time, no trip to Seville could possibly be complete without an evening or two out on the town. Seville is well known as the birthplace of Tapas, so visit a few restaurants or bars and get eating! Anyone looking for a proper party later on will be right at home, the Spanish love a good night out and often go well into the morning. Don’t expect to get home until the sun is shining!

Seville is a one-of-a-kind destination. As a cultural and artistic centre it can compete with best the world has to offer, and as the Andalucían capital it embodies the easy-going, party-hard attitude that has drawn visitors for decades.
