Upolu Island Information

At 1115 sq kilometres, Upolu is the second largest and most populous island of Samoa. It has has the capital, Apia (pop 59,000) and the Faleolo international airport. although you're hardly likely to be bowled over by the hustle and bustle. This is a sleepy South Pacific island and even at its busiest it's wonderfully laid back.

Upolu has only a narrow coastal plain with a mountainous interior but there are some magnificent beaches along its coastline, many of which have resorts with Samoan style bungalows or 'fales' of varying standards. You'll find it an overwhelmingly friendly place; Samoans in the main are welcoming and hospitable but quite family focused and religious.

Apia, which is in the middle of the north coast, is also home to the Robert Louis Stevenson museum. The museum celebrates the life of the Scottish novelist, poet and travel writer. Stevenson and his wife lived at Apia for some years and are both buried on the island.

There are many waterfalls and pools on Upolu worth visiting but as with some of the beaches you may be asked to pay a small fee for using them.
