Wellington Information

New Zealand's centre of art, coffee, and culture, Wellington is a destination that combines inner-city charm with excellent access to some of the region's best wineries, scenery, and wildlife. Wellington stretches back from a small harbour and extends up to the surrounding hillside, making the central districts a compact and dynamic hotbed for boutique art galleries, shopping, and world-class dining establishments.

Around Wellington you can check out the New Zealand National Museum (known as Te Papa) for a dose of the country's history and a taste of the traditional Maori culture. You can also catch a glimpse of some the native wildlife at the Zealandia animal sanctuary.

For a great view of the entire city you should trek up to the lookouts in the nearby hills or take a ride on the Wellington Cable Car. A number of local companies also operate tours around the spectacular South Coast and countryside of New Zealand's north island. Once you've finished exploring you can kick back and relax in one of the many bars and restaurants, visit one of the numerous galleries, or enjoy the spirited nightlife.

New Zealanders are a friendly bunch, and the people of Wellington are no exception. You'll enjoy an affable reception nearly everywhere you go. Temperatures in Wellington range from around 9 or 10C in winter (but colder at night) to about 25C in summer, though the city is renowned for being extremely windy, and you'll need to pack warm clothes – especially if you plan on heading inland or taking trips along the rugged coastline.

Wellington is best travelled on foot, particularly if you want to spend most of your time around the city centre. But if you do feel like exploring a little further, the city has an excellent and affordable bus system. Flights to most other destinations in New Zealand as well as major cities in Australia frequently leave from the local airport.
