A tandem skydive jump over the Lake and city is a particularly powerful memory to take home. The city and its surrounds are also renowned as a heartland of Maori culture and history. There's a good range of accommodation; from award winning backpackers to luxury lodges and there's plenty of good shopping and dining as well as some worthwhile cultural attractions and museums.

Government Gardens and the lake foreshore are great for the leisurely explorer, and the opportunity to relax in a hot pool with a view is pretty hard to beat.
