Milford Sound Information

British explorer Captain James Cook steered clear of Milford Sound thinking its entrance too dangerous and narrow to offer safe access to an anchorage. It remained little visited by Europeans until the 20th century when the true grandeur of the place became known.

Today, Milford Sound is still remote, but is visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. It lies in the Fjordland region in the South West of New Zealand's south island. Along its 15 kilometre length, massive cliff faces rise tom the water, making you feel quite insignificant as you gaze up in awe. There are a number of distinctive peaks around the sound, notably The Elephant and The Lion, both named for the shapes. The elephant rises to 1,517 metres and The Lion to 1,302 metres.

The rainfall here is incredibly high, with an average of 182 rainy days per year and falls of 250mm in 24 hours not uncommon. Rain or shine Milford Sound is always spectacular, with clear weather delivering an idea of its vastness and wet weather, with the accompanying torrents falling from the mountain sides, an up close and personal experience of nature's raw power.

Options for seeing Milford Sound include a 4 day walk along the Milford Track, a day of sea kayaking, car or bus journeys from Queenstown or Te Anau with a 1 to 2 hour cruise on the sound in the middle, an overnight cruise or what would have to rank as one of the most spectacular light plane flights in the world.
