Currency

New Zealand's currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZ$). The currency is relatively strong, usually fluctuating between NZ$1.60-NZ$2 to 1 US Dollar. Coins have values of 10, 20 and 50 cents, $1 and $2; notes have values of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.

It is relatively easy to change foreign currency into New Zealand dollars both internationally and within New Zealand, at banks, some hotels and foreign exchange centres found in major airports and city centres. There is no restriction on the amount of foreign currency that can be brought in or taken out of New Zealand. However, every person who carries more than NZ$10,000 in cash in or out of New Zealand is required to complete a Border Cash Report. All major credit cards can be used in New Zealand, while travellers Cheques are accepted at hotels, banks and some stores.

Automatic Tellar Machines and electronic banking are widely used and available in New Zealand.

A Goods and Service Tax (GST) is in use throughout New Zealand, however the displayed price includes this tax. Larger purchases that are taken out of the country can have the GST refunded upon departure.
