Auckland Region Information

Located on the northern end of New Zealand's North Island Auckland is known in the Maori language as Tamaki Makau Rau, which roughly translates to 'girl with a thousand admirers.' It was called this because it was so desirable to many of the tribes in the area because of it's sunny weather, beautiful scenery and great fishing.

Nowadays Aukland is known as the 'City of Sails' with a magnificent harbour perfect for sailing and a dozen beautiful islands to explore out in the bay. On just about any sunny day the waters around Aukland are teeming with colourful sails on the sparkling blue and green ocean. There are also dozens of beautiful white sandy beaches within thirty minutes of the CBD so as the temperature rises you'll see families packing up and heading down to the beach to cool off.

The city of Aukland is a cosmopolitan melting pot with cultures from all around the world calling the city home. The Maori traditions are very strong but have blended well with other influences from Africa, Europe, Asia and the South Pacific. The city itself is an international city with a population of around 1.5 million people and offers visitors every convenience with accommodation options ranging from backpacker dorms to penthouse suites and you can even hire a luxury yacht and stay on the harbour.

Aukland also has a great range of dining and cuisines from all over the world are well represented in the hundreds of cafes and restaurants throughout the city. You'll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping as Auckland has some of the best shopping on the North Island. There are around 100 wineries located within a short distance of Aukland which means going on a wine tasting tour is simple - and New Zealand wines are some of the best in the world.
