Cancun Information

Cancún, a stunning coastal city located on the Yucatan peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo and has come a long way in a short period. From its roots as a small fishing village in the 1970s, it has become one of the most popular vacation destinations in Mexico. With the lovely turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean, kilometres of white sandy beaches and rows of luxury all-inclusive hotels, it is easy to see why it attracts tourists from all over the globe.

Located at the north-eastern point of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancún is made up of two distinct regions. The first is the 22km long island where most of the hotels are located (the Zona Hotelera), and which is accessible from the mainland by north and south bridges. The second is the centre of the city of Cancún itself, where there are restaurants, clubs, shops and markets. The population of the rapidly expanding Cancún region is well over half a million, with around 4 million visitors a year.

The main attraction of Cancún is definitely the gorgeous beaches with their warm and crystal-clear waters. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of water-sports including snorkelling, scuba diving, jet-skiing, surfing, sailing and parasailing as the island is ideally located between the Caribbean and the calm water of Laguna Nichupté.

The most popular water pursuits are scuba diving off the Isla Mujeres and snorkelling along the coral reef at the Punta Nizu, where you might catch a glimpse of blue tang, angelfish and parrotfish. For those who prefer a little distance from the underwater wildlife, there are glass-bottomed boats where the splendour of the coral reef can be enjoyed without getting wet.

Cancún is also famous for its night life and visitors will soon discover that there are plenty of ways to join the party. For the hardcore party folk, there is a “Party Hopper Package” that gives you all you can drink access to a handful of the most popular clubs for a reasonable rate. You can purchase these at most tour offices or travel agencies in Cancun. Check out the Congo Bongo, or La Boom; and for great cocktails with hip ambiance, try the Glazz lounge bar.

For those interested in cultural pursuits, a visit to Xcaret, an eco-archaeological park located in Playa del Carmen is definitely a must. Here visitors can swim in underground rivers, take a guided tour of the caverns, visit a Mayan village and enjoy the botanical garden with a butterfly pavilion, aviary and aquarium displaying local flora and fauna. The Museum of Anthropology and History located in the Cancun Convention Centre provides visitors with insight into the rich culture and history of this fascinating region of Mexico.
