Oia Information

Oia is a small town on the island of Santorini (Thira) in the beautiful Greek archipelago. The town is located on the western coast on the northern 'arm' of the massive caldera that makes up the island, and many of the buildings have been built on the steep cliff faces that  over look Santorini harbour and out into the Aegean Sea. Because of the way it's situated the town also has views over the eastern coast out into the Mediterranean sea. Similar to the architecture on the rest of the island, most buildings have a dazzling whitewashed finish although some are also decorated in rich colours, the most prominent of which are rich blues and soft pastels.

The streets of the town are generally very narrow and suited only to foot traffic. This is not a problem as everywhere is easily accessible on foot, however depending on where you stay you may have to contend with lots of stairs! The western aspect gives amazing views of the sun setting into the Mediterranean and it's possible to enjoy a relaxed meal while taking in the sunset in one of the many restaurants on the western side of town. It's wise to reserve your table or to get there early as the restaurants fill up quickly in the hour prior to sunset.

Buses regularly run between Oia and island's capital, Fira 11km to the south, but the trip can be very exciting as the roads are narrow and the drivers all seem to be ex-race car drivers! Another option is to catch a taxi from either the port or the town square in Fira. The fare is reasonable and is even cheaper if you allow the driver to carry more than one fare. Hire cars are also available in Fira but travelling by taxi is generally cheaper and easier.

Accommodation options in Oia are very good considering the town's size. There are hotels to suit most budgets and prices depend mainly on the quality of the amenities and the views from the rooms.

Oia is a small town blessed with many traditional Greek virtues and has retained its charm while maintaining a mostly tourist economy. The relaxed island lifestyle matches perfectly with the warm Mediterranean climate allowing visitors to enjoy a wonderful Greek Island experience.
