Greek Islands Information

The Greek Islands are famous around the world for their striking landscapes and brilliant towns set against the welcoming azure Mediterranean sea. The collection of 6000 islands are broken up into major chains, Argo-Sarconic, cyclades, North Agean, Dodecanese, Sporades and the Ionian Islands. The islands range is size from tiny to very large with most of them being uninhabited. The Greek Islands are extremely popular with travelers with access to the islands being via flights and ferries from the mainland or cruise ships dropping in along their journey.

The 240 Cyclades islands are famous for Mykonos and Santorini which form part of this circular chain of islands. These two destinations offer the traveller stunning vistas from the volcanic caldera and mountains combined with the famous traditional architecture. These are stand out destinations that appear in almost every Greek travel brochure.

The Argo-Saronic Islands are located only 10 minutes ferry away from Athens and well known for their traditional lifestyles and architecture. Of the seven inhabited islands, Salamina and Aegina are famous for the ancient Greek and Persian battles and the ancient Temple of Aphaia.

The Sporades chain of islands is located in the northern part of the Agean Sea with only four of the islands being inhabited. These out of the way islands are fairly unspoiled by tourism and offer visitors a wide range of beaches, coves and traditional Greek towns to explore and enjoy yourself in. The National Marine park of Alonissos is well worth a day trip as is hiking around the many trails and roads that connect the towns.
