Transport & Getting Around

The Olympic Games of 2004 in Athens provided Greece with the opportunity to upgrade its transport systems so you will benefit from new roads and infrastructure.

The main airports are in Athens, Thessaloniki, Corfu and Rhodes. In Athens, a 24-hour bus service operates between the airport and the city. The main airlines are Olympic Airlines (www.olympicairlines.com) and Aegean Airlines (www.aegeanair.com).

Because of the mountainous terrain, the train system in Greece is not as good as the bus network which has links from the major cities to almost all small villages. Trains do, however, link Greece with central Europe and Turkey and the journey from the ferry port of Patra to Athens is a scenic route to take.

You may not want to navigate a hired car around the tricky mountain passes either. The roads are narrow and overtaking is the major cause of road accidents. Traffic drives on the right, the minimum age for driving is 18 and non-EU citizens must carry an international driver's licence from their home country. Most international car hire companies operate in Greece and insurance is included in the hire fee, but check whether this is comprehensive or third party only.

The one form of transport that is synonymous with Greece is the ferry. Island hopping is very popular in the high season (summer) so factor in some waiting time if ferries are booked out. The frequency and reliability are usually good but in the low season you may have to plan more in advance as the weather can cause cancellations. Ferry schedules are posted at the boat ticket offices in departure ports. The main thing is, be flexible with your travel plans.
