Weather & Climate

Germany has a temperate climate, with cool, wet winters (colder in the east and south) and mild summers. In winter, temperatures range from a high of 2°C on the North German Plain to a low of -6°C in the mountains. Average temperatures in summer range from 18°C on the North German Plain to 20°C in the sheltered valleys of the south.

The best time to visit Germany largely depends on what type of holiday you have in mind. Most visitors arrive between May and September when the weather is warmer. Summer is fabulous as cities come to life during the warmer months – beer gardens are packed, and festivals and outdoor events are in full swing.

From November to March, skies are often gloomier and the mercury can drop below freezing. On the plus side, there are fewer visitors and shorter queues (except in the winter resorts). During this time, there are only six to eight hours of daylight. In December, the sun (if there is any) sets around 3.30pm.

The ski season usually starts in early to mid-December, moves into full swing after the New Year and closes down again with the onset of the snowmelt in March.
