Nice Information

There are cities that you feel you have been to before, even before you get there. In your mind’s eye you can see the beach as the sun lights upon the water. You can feel the vibe from the people, feel the heat from the beach and hear the hum of the traffic. Nice is such a city, you may never have been there before but as soon as you arrive you know that you have seen it, from a book or a movie. It has sat in your imagination and it does not disappoint you.

Nice, is one of the coast towns that sit along the Côte d’Azur or the French Riviera. From as far back as the ancient Greeks, Nice has long been adored by locals and travellers alike. And whilst this town and those along the Côte d’Azur carry the burden of being very sought after, there is still much to reward the traveller. You can stay simply to bask in the glamour of the beach and its surrounds or can roam through the old town or explore the hillside towns.

With a population of close to 400, 000 and with the second busiest airport in France, Nice is a large town that spreads back from its beach and harbour and up to the hillsides that surround it. With a beautiful climate that guarantees sunshine for most of the year and very mild winters, visitors can be found not only on the beach but in the many town squares, cathedrals and museums that dot the area. Artists have long been drawn to Nice and many of the works of those such as Chagall and Matisse are still exhibited there.

With a rich history, that has seen Nice governed by France and Italy and at various times heavily populated by wealthy English and Russian Aristocrats, the town bears the marks of all of her previous suitors. There are Russian churches and laneways date back 500 years to Italian settlement. The main pebble beach is hugged by the Promenade des Anglais or “the walkway of the English” and one of the best examples of how its visitors have made their impact on this cosmopolitan and beautiful city.

The many town squares can provide a hub for the visitor, with each providing access to local markets. These squares are also the starting point for some of the old town lanes which are the location of many of the local shops and restaurants.

Time spent in this picturesque city, down at the harbour or on a beach lounge will confirm what you thought you always knew of this fabulous part of France.

That is if you can be pulled away from the beach…….
