Mystery is ever-present here. We know that the pit of Fontaine de Vaucluse is at least 300 meters deep, but no one know how deep the actual chasm itself goes. Geologists are still struggling to understand where all the springs which feed into the perpetual resurgence come from, and where the swiftness of the flow comes from.

Poets are perhaps wiser, since they, like Petrarch and René Char, are content to draw their inspiration from the water. One thing is certain - the sight of this mint green water surging forth from the ground in the light and heat of summer is a sheer delight that never fades. And the temperature of the water at a constant at 13°C even in summertime, provides relaxing coolness all around the site.

At the Petrarch Museum, the underground Museum and the Vallis clausa paper mill, which continues traditional paper-making, you can retrace the spirit and the adventures of the past that have coloured the history this magical spring.
