Kadavu Islands Information

The wild and stunning Kadavu Islands of Fiji are around 90 kilometres to the south of Viti Levu and the other main tourist destinations of Fiji. The largest island of the Kadavu Islands is the fourth largest of all of Fiji's island and is possessed of a rugged and wild landscape of mountains and dense forests that rise up over the beaches surrounding it. It is just under 100 kilometres in length and is 13 kilometres across at it's widest point. There are around 10,000 Melanesians that live on Kadavu today. William Bligh was the first european to visit the Kadavu Islands during his second expidition to Fiji in the late 1700's.

Kadavu has it's own airport at Vunisea, however getting around from there is almost exclusively achieved by boat because of the challenging terrain. The resorts provide transfers to and from the airport. The airport is close by to it's namesake Vunisea, the largest town of the Kadavu Group. The landing strip at Vunisea crosses the full width of the island which provides a slightly disconcerting sight for those visiting the first time.

Kadavu has a prominent central ridgeline of mountains that peak at about 800 metres. The volcanic origins of the island provide fertile soils which are used to grow bananas, copra commercially. Timber is also harvested from the forests and transported to local mills for processing. The island's native rainforests are largely intact and are home to scores of species of birds, some of which are unique to the island group.

Although it is not a mainstream destination, Kadavu is highly prized for it's unspoilt landscapes and is building a reputation as an excellent eco-tourism destination. Many favour kadavu for being able to offer a genuine and non-commercialised Fijian experience. The island is known for the various outdoor activities on offer. Sea Kayaking is a great way to view the coastline and gain a new perspective of the mountainous terrain of the interior The west side of Kadavu has some good surf breaks or you can try your hand at some fishing aboard a game-fishing tour.

Back on dry land there are opportunities to explore the forests on treks and if you are a birdwatcher then you can try to spot the 4 species that are unique to this part of Fiji - the Crimson Shining Parrot, Kadavu honeyeater, Velvet Dove and the Kadavu Faintain. You can also take a tour to a tradtional village and get a taste of true Fiji traditions and ways of life.

Underwater pursuits also attract many to the Kadavu Islands as there are many excellent diving and snorkelling locations around the islands. The Great-Astrolabe Reef which stretches around 100 kilometres lies off the east coast of Kadavu and reaches half-way to Suva. It is a world renowned dive spot with a fantastic variety of sea life including large crops of hard corals. Those less experienced are also catered fro as there are plenty of snorkelling spots with mild currents which are a short boat ride from the Island.
