San Pedro de Atacama Information

Situated in northern Chile San Pedro de Atacam is hugely popular with Chileans and international visitors who come to see incredible natural attractions in the surrounding areas, principally in the Los Flamencos National Reserve. The town itself if unremarkable and can be a bit expensive compared to other places in Chile, however there are plenty of facilities and places to eat and most find it pleasant enough.

Some of the main places to explore around the town include the El Tatio geyser field where some of the highest geysers in the world occur, it's a huge geothermal wonder with hot springs you can bath in as well as the steam jets rising into the air. Many of the tour companies get there before dawn which is the best time to see them.

The Valley of the moons is also nearby which offers a stunning barren landscape with distinctive moonlike hills, which is a great place to watch the sunset.

The Laguna Antiplanicas is anothe key drawcard. As the name suggests it is high on the Antiplano and is a salt rich flat landscape backed by the alps, it's a surreal place to visit and quite unique. Watch out for the sun and the cold wind too, both of which may surprise you.
