The shape of the country is often likened to an elongated S', and is home to landscapes of natural beauty, rich culture, picturesque sea resorts and busy cities.

The Vietnam currency is the Dong (VND), with no smaller denominations. However, sometimes US currency is accepted as unofficial tender if notes are relatively new and unmarked. Some cities also now accept Euro. Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam, and many other ethnic languages are spoken in parts of Vietnam. It is not uncommon for some English, French and Chinese language to be spoken also.

Vietnam experiences a varied climate from north to south. Northern Vietnam experiences a cool and dry season between November and April, and May to October experiences a hot rainy season. In the south the weather is hot and humid year round, but particularly between February and May, with a season of rain between May and November.

Peak season for Vietnam travel is from September to April.
