Sitting majestically against the river Thames, the iconic British Houses of Parliament are situated over the original Palace of Westminster. The first royal palace was constructed in the eleventh century but was destroyed by fire in 1512. The current gothic structure was designed by architect Charles Berry with the foundation stone laid in 1840 and was virtually completed by 1852. All surviving elements of previous structures were incorporated into the new design. Today the Houses of Parliament remain one of the most easily recognisable buildings in the country.

Political enthusiasts will appreciate walking past Downing Street and gazing through the gates into number 10, the official residence of the Prime Minister. The house has entertained 53 Prime Ministers – the first being Sir Robert Walpole since the mid eighteenth century. The gates were installed in 1991 as an added security for the Prime Minister.

For added political interest consider taking a trip to the city of York, to visit the remains of a castle built by William the Conqueror.

London Heathrow, 22km from the centre, is the city’s principle airport, while Gatwick Airport, is the capital’s second largest international airport, 46km from the city. Flights from Australia to London generally take between 20 and 23 hours, and usually involve a stop in Asia or the Middle East.
