Your Perfect Honeymoon
Tying the Knot Overseas

If you've always dreamt about you and your fiancé tying the knot overseas, then why not do it! Las Vegas, Fiji, Paris, the choice is yours. Once you've decided on a destination, the next step is getting all the right information to make sure your wedding day is the most perfect day of your life, and more importantly, legal!

To ensure your marriage is legal, you need to make sure your nuptials comply with that country's marriage laws, as well as Australia's, so do your research. Contact the Consulate of the country where you want to get married in, as each country has specific requirements for marriages. Also, your local Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade office is also a helpful source of information if you're planning to wed overseas.

Some countries may request a 'Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage', which you can obtain through overseas missions and state and territory offices of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This certificate is not a requirement of Australian law, but is a certificate to ensure a marriage between two Australians overseas is legal.

Once you've planned the destination, keep in mind that there may be a waiting period or a requirement for a certain length of stay in the country before the marriage takes place. Make sure you factor this in when planning you special day and travel dates.

Other possible requirements for getting overseas are evidence that you're both free to marry, some countries need to take a blood test; an original birth certificate, and some may require both a civil and religious ceremony.

Once you've sorted out the legalities, then it's time to plan the trip! Are you only going to get married, or will you have your wedding and honeymoon overseas? This will help you sort out travel dates, factoring in any time requirements imposed by the country in which you plan to wed. Once you've sorted out dates, make sure you give friends and family plenty of notice to organise their own travel if they plan to share in your special day.

Getting married overseas is sure to be a special and memorable day for you and your loved ones!
