Overview
There are so many reasons to visit this wonderful city: the fantastic Sydney weather, the landmark architecture, the sophisticated arts scene, the international cuisines, the buzzing markets, and much, much more. Whether you're watching a ballet at the opera house, meeting super-cute koalas at the zoo or gobbling down platefuls of excellent spicy Thai food, this city answers your every need. There's a Sydney holiday package with your name on it.
Things to do
Take to the waters for a cruise, and you can marvel at the iconic arch of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the jutting shell shapes of the Sydney Opera House. Enjoy great harbour views from the lush green environs of the Royal Botanic Gardens, and get to grips with a range of wildlife at Taronga Zoo with its Sky Safari cable-car. Bondi Beach is great for watching the surfers tackle the waves breaking onto the white sands.
Food & restaurants
Sydney restaurants offer an eclectic dining scene. For the wow factor, book in for upscale Greek cuisine at The Apollo, a Sydney favourite. For super-hot southern Thai food at low prices, check out the steaming bowls at Caysorn Thai, or get cheap and tasty Mexican dishes at El Loco. For great views, you can look down on Sydney from the stylish roof terraces of Darlo Bar or Corridor.
Accommodation
Choose the upscale Shangri-La for the ultimate luxury experience complete with panoramic views over the city. Other Sydney accommodation includes Blue Maritime Mansions for a chic duplex surrounded by watery vistas. Springfield Lodge has simple, attractive accommodation with a good-value price tag, and there's a host of quality hostels to take care of the backpackers, such as Noah's Bondi Beach, set just minutes from the famous sands.
Shopping
Shopping in Sydney is an adventure, particularly if you're a fan of markets. There are loads to choose from, such as the Chinatown Night Market, Bondi Beach Market and Kirribilli General Market. Shop for collectable vinyl at Red Eye Records, find designer clothing and stop for a coffee at the Victorian Strand Arcade or opt for the vast Westfield Bondi Junction centre.
Local Flavours
Hidden under the car park that serves the Domain gardens lies more than two hundred metres of moving walkway. The travelator (futuristic when it was installed in 1960) was updated in 1994, and saves busy pedestrians a few minutes of walking by taking them in a straight line underground.
